Burghley House
Just a nine-mile drive away on the edge of Stamford, Burghley House is one of the finest Elizabethan houses in England, set within a thousand acres of rolling parkland. Wander through opulent state rooms filled with centuries of art and treasures, then take your time exploring the gardens and grounds — it’s a proper day out, and one of the most impressive stately homes anywhere in the country.
Defender Burghley Horse Trials
Every September, Burghley House plays host to the Defender Burghley Horse Trials, one of the biggest events on the international eventing calendar. Thousands of visitors descend on the grounds to watch world-class riders take on the cross-country course, browse the trade stands, and soak up the atmosphere.
Stamford
A short hop from the park, Stamford is one of England’s prettiest market towns — all honey-coloured stone, cobbled streets and independent shops. Spend an afternoon browsing, stop for lunch in one of its many cafes and pubs, or just enjoy the walk; it’s easy to see why it’s been used as the backdrop for countless period dramas.
Rutland Water
Around sixteen miles from the park, Rutland Water is England’s largest reservoir by surface area and a brilliant spot for a proper day outdoors. Cycle or walk the trail that circles the water, try your hand at sailing or windsurfing, or head to the nature reserve for some of the best birdwatching in the country.
Nene Valley Railway
Steam train enthusiasts and families alike love the Nene Valley Railway, a heritage line running between Peterborough and Yarwell around thirteen miles from the park. Climb aboard a beautifully restored carriage and watch the countryside roll by, with themed events running throughout the year — from Thomas the Tank Engine days to festive specials.
Sacrewell
A working farm and country centre near Peterborough, about thirteen miles away, Sacrewell is a great choice for a family day out with younger children. Meet the animals, watch the historic watermill in action, and explore the nature trails, with seasonal highlights like lambing days adding something extra depending on when you visit.
Springfields Festival Gardens & Outlet
Around twelve miles away in Spalding, Springfields combines fifteen acres of beautifully landscaped gardens with an outlet shopping centre, making it easy to spend a full day there. Visit in spring and you’ll catch the gardens at their best, awash with tulips and colour, before treating yourself to a browse round the shops and a coffee.
Peterborough
Just eight miles from the park, Peterborough is the nearest city and well worth a visit in its own right. Its striking Norman cathedral is one of the finest in the country, and the city centre offers plenty more besides — shops, restaurants and entertainment for whenever you fancy a change of pace.
Grimsthorpe Castle, Park & Gardens
A short drive of around eleven miles from the park, Grimsthorpe is a working country estate with a real castle at its heart, set in acres of rolling Lincolnshire parkland. Explore the state rooms and gardens, keep an eye out for the estate’s deer as you wander the grounds, and let the kids burn off some energy in the adventure playground — with a regular calendar of open days and events throughout the year, there’s usually something extra on if you time it right.
Baytree Garden Centre & Owl and Wildlife Centre
About fourteen miles away near Spalding, Baytree combines one of the region’s largest garden centres with an owl and wildlife centre next door, home to birds of prey, reptiles and small animals. Browse the plants, gifts and home ware, grab a bite in one of the cafes, then head next door to see the birds up close — it’s an easy way to fill a few hours, whatever the weather.
